Rough-Hewn fine jewelry
Rough-hewn, yet distinctively elegant, Sophie’s jewelry embodies a timeless sense of sophisticated simplicity. At once raw and refined, masculine and feminine, Sophie’s designs strip to the core – free of the frilly and superfluous, definitive but not defining.
Sophie is an instinctive artist, driven by the push and pull, the malleability of raw metal as it surrenders beneath hammer blows. Her metals play muse to her custom commissions and limited-production collections for an intimate selection of shops across the US.
HANDCRAFTED WITH INTEGRITY
Each piece is individually forged start-to-finish in Sophie’s studio using timeworn hammers, anvils, hand tools and torches. Sophie uses the highest quality recycled gold and silver, along with certified reclaimed or ethically sourced gems, for environmentally and socially responsible jewelry. Typically, twenty tons of mining waste are produced to mine gold for a single wedding band, at the expense of local communities, workers, and the environment – an unbelievable devastation we thankfully avoid by using sustainable, recycled gold.
About Sophie hughes
I’m inspired by the challenge of making jewelry that’s totally wearable, day in and day out, both physically and aesthetically. It has to be simple but interesting, comfortable, flattering, and durable. I try on every single piece of jewelry I make, to make sure it lays right on the chest, hangs balanced from the ear, or is comfortable when shaking hands. My hammer and anvil, my other timeworn tools, and the process of making propel me.
A 2008 grad from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in Metalsmithing, Sophie opened Ore, a hybrid studio/store, in November 2013. Ore was awarded Best Everyday Jewelry 2014 by Boston Magazine – after less than a year open. Sophie was awarded Best Boston Jewelry Designer of 2014 by the Improper Bostonian Magazine, and in Spring 2015 Boston Common Magazine forecast Sophie as a “local designer that will make it big”.
Sophie’s jewelry has walked the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York for SS13, been featured at Bloomingdale’s in Chestnut Hill, MA, and spotted on Taylor Schilling, Rose Byrne, and Lucy Hale.
